Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabéu with little room for a stumble, facing a Villarreal side that has rediscovered its bite just as the hosts seek to recover from a damaging derby defeat. For Carlo Ancelotti’s team, the mission is clear: protect their perfect home record, close the gap at the top of La Liga and restore authority after losing 2-1 to Atlético Madrid. Villarreal, meanwhile, arrive with back-to-back league victories and the confidence to believe that Madrid’s defensive uncertainty can be exploited.

The champions’ recent form has been strong enough to preserve their status as overwhelming favourites, though not flawless. Real Madrid have won three of their last five competitive matches and scored 10 goals in that sequence, including a 4-1 demolition of Rayo Vallecano and a 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter. The defeats to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid, however, have exposed occasional vulnerability. Their broader league numbers remain formidable: eight wins from their last 10 league games, an average of 2.5 goals scored per match and a perfect home record this season.

Villarreal’s recent story is one of recovery. After a six-match winless run across all competitions, Marcelino’s side have responded with consecutive 3-1 La Liga wins over Málaga and Levante. They have scored 11 times across their last five matches, although they have conceded 11 as well, a balance that captures both their attacking ambition and defensive looseness. Their league record over the last 10 games is far less imposing than Madrid’s, but their upward momentum makes them a dangerous visitor rather than a passive underdog.

The tactical picture is likely to be defined by Madrid’s pressure against Villarreal’s compactness. Real Madrid are expected to dominate possession, push their full-backs high and attack with the overwhelming individual quality of Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Mbappé leads the club’s scoring charts with eight goals, while Bellingham has five, and both possess the movement and invention to unsettle a disciplined defensive block.

Marcelino’s Villarreal are likely to begin in a compact 4-4-2 mid-block, narrowing the central lanes and encouraging Madrid to circulate possession in wider areas. The Yellow Submarine’s route to danger will come in transition. Quick vertical passing into the channels behind Madrid’s advancing full-backs could turn the hosts’ attacking aggression against them, particularly given the makeshift nature of the home defence. Aurélien Tchouaméni may be required to move into central defence alongside Antonio Rüdiger, with Raúl Asencio, Ferland Mendy and suspended Dean Huijsen among the absentees. Éder Militão is not yet ready to start, while Ibrahima Konaté and Federico Valverde are doubts.

That defensive crisis offers Villarreal their clearest opening. Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches, and the visitors have scored in all seven of their league games this season. Tajon Buchanan’s muscular injury and Santi Comesaña’s ankle problem reduce Villarreal’s options, but the side’s core remains intact and its counter-attacking structure should still pose questions. The battle between Madrid’s midfield control and Villarreal’s compact, fast-shifting central unit may determine whether the visitors can survive the opening storm and spring forward with purpose.

Vinícius Júnior is another subplot worth watching. The Brazilian has scored only once this season and is reportedly battling a crisis of confidence, leaving Madrid’s left flank short of its usual explosiveness. His duel with Villarreal’s right-sided defensive unit could be decisive: if Vinícius finds his rhythm, the visitors’ block may be stretched beyond repair; if he remains subdued, Madrid could be forced into a more patient and predictable attack.

History offers Villarreal little comfort. Real Madrid have won 32 of the 55 previous meetings, compared with Villarreal’s six, and have gone unbeaten in the last six encounters, winning five. Madrid have also won the last four head-to-head meetings, including a 2-0 victory at the Estadio de la Cerámica in January 2026. At the Bernabéu, the recent sequence is even more emphatic: victories of 3-1, 2-0 and 4-1 in the last three visits by Villarreal.

The expectation is therefore for Madrid to seize control early, force Villarreal deep and eventually make their superior attacking quality count. Yet this should not be mistaken for a straightforward clean-sheet assignment. Villarreal’s revived confidence, direct transitions and Madrid’s patched-up defence point towards a game in which both sides can score. Real Madrid remain the likelier winners, with the strongest indicators pointing to a high-scoring home victory. The key factor will be whether Villarreal can turn Madrid’s defensive absences into meaningful counter-attacking chances before Mbappé and Bellingham break open the game. Prediction: Real Madrid to win, with goals at both ends.
