Arsenal and Chelsea meet at the Emirates with perfect Premier League records intact, but little else in their opening weeks has looked alike. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have begun with two victories, four goals and two clean sheets; Chelsea have also taken maximum points, yet their seven goals have arrived alongside five conceded. This is a derby between the division’s early defensive standard-bearers and its most combustible attacking force, with momentum, local pride and a place at the top of the table all at stake.

Arsenal’s opening wins over Coventry City and Aston Villa have carried the familiar imprint of control. They dismantled Coventry 3-0 before grinding out a 1-0 victory at Villa Park, where they held 61 per cent possession and restricted the hosts to only two shots on target. Bukayo Saka supplied the decisive moment against Villa, underlining once again how Arsenal’s elaborate possession game can eventually be settled by a single flash of quality. Their 3-0 Community Shield triumph over Manchester City further strengthened the sense that this is a side already operating at competitive intensity.

Chelsea’s start has been more exhilarating and far less secure. They edged Fulham 3-2 away before surviving a seven-goal thriller against Brighton, winning 4-3 despite having only 26 per cent possession. Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, João Pedro and Cole Palmer all found the net in that contest, a snapshot of the attacking variety now available to Xabi Alonso. But the same game exposed the fault line beneath Chelsea’s bright beginning: they have not kept a league clean sheet in 18 consecutive matches. Their capacity to hurt opponents is unquestioned; their ability to protect a lead remains a much harder sell.

The tactical collision should be compelling. Arsenal are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1, pressing aggressively from the front and using rapid vertical passing, wide overloads and counter-pressing to pin Chelsea deep. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard will be central to that plan, with Rice providing the ball-winning authority and Ødegaard supplying the angles and invention between the lines. Saka’s duel on Arsenal’s right could be decisive, particularly if Chelsea deploy Jorrel Hato or Levi Colwill in a wide defensive role. His direct running and ability to attack the space outside the back three represent one of the clearest routes through Chelsea’s structure.

Chelsea are likely to answer with a 3-4-2-1, although a 4-2-3-1 remains possible. Alonso’s side should seek a compact defensive shape before springing forward through overlapping wing-backs and narrow attacking midfielders. Palmer will be the creative fulcrum, drifting into pockets where he can turn and release runners, while João Pedro offers the pace and finishing threat to punish Arsenal whenever the Gunners’ full-backs advance too far. Reece James could also play an important role, both in resisting Arsenal’s left-sided attacks and in providing Chelsea with an outlet when they escape the press.

The midfield battle may determine whether this becomes an Arsenal procession or another Chelsea shootout. Rice is expected to be available after recovering from a knock, a major boost for Arsenal given the defensive uncertainty around the team. He will be tested by Romeo Lavia and, if he passes a late fitness check, Moisés Caicedo. Chelsea’s central control is further complicated by injuries and the departure of Enzo Fernández, while Arsenal must compensate for William Saliba’s long-term absence. Jurrien Timber could return to the squad, but Cristhian Mosquera is a doubt and Ezri Konsa may be required alongside Gabriel. That reshaped back line gives Palmer and João Pedro an inviting target.

Chelsea’s own defensive absences are significant. Wesley Fofana is suspended, while Colwill, Marc Cucurella and several other options are unavailable. The resulting lack of continuity could be especially damaging against Kai Havertz, whose movement as a false nine or central forward can drag defenders out of position. Havertz’s link play will test a likely back three of Fofana’s replacement, Maxence Lacroix and another central defender, while Arsenal will look to create uncertainty between Chelsea’s centre-backs and wing-backs.

History adds another layer of pressure. Across 211 meetings, Arsenal lead Chelsea 85 wins to 66, with 60 draws. The recent Premier League sequence is even more favourable to the Gunners: they are unbeaten in the last six league encounters, winning four and drawing two, and have taken the last three meetings overall. Arsenal won 2-1 at the Emirates in March, followed by a 1-0 league victory in March 2025 and the emphatic 5-0 demolition in April 2024. Chelsea have not kept a clean sheet against Arsenal in the Premier League since August 2021.

The match may begin cautiously as Arsenal attempt to establish territorial dominance and Chelsea absorb the pressure, but an early goal could shatter that restraint. If Arsenal strike first, they have the structure to manage the contest and force Chelsea to chase. If Chelsea score, the game could become stretched immediately, with Arsenal’s advanced full-backs leaving space for rapid counters. The final half-hour looks particularly dangerous: Chelsea’s likely attacking substitutions could make them more threatening, but they may also expose the defensive gaps Arsenal are best equipped to exploit.

Arsenal’s home advantage, superior recent record in this fixture and early defensive authority make them the more convincing winner. Chelsea’s attack should ensure the Gunners are tested, and the visitors’ recent scoring rate points toward an open contest rather than a shutout. The prediction is Arsenal to win, with over 2.5 goals a strong possibility. The decisive factor will be whether Arsenal’s press can suffocate Chelsea’s first pass before Palmer and João Pedro find the space to turn this derby into chaos.
